Flying with a Firearm: My Experience as a Texas Mom and Southwest Airlines Fan
By Ashley Malfitano
As a proud Texas girl, I love supporting businesses that share my Lone Star roots, and Southwest Airlines is one of my top picks for many reasons. Beyond their Texas roots and being conveniently based out of Dallas, they make traveling simple, even for those of us who occasionally fly with a firearm.
Bringing a firearm to the airport can feel intimidating. It's an environment where protocols and emotions around security are heightened. Those new to concealed carry often ask will my weapon be confiscated? I'm afraid I'll miss my flight! Can I get arrested?
These questions are totally fair, and I've got good news! 🤗
Here’s a breakdown to help you feel more confident flying with your firearm, just like I do.
Southwest Airlines Firearm Policy
Declaration at Check-In: Each customer can check a firearm in place of one of their two free checked bags, but it must be declared at the check-in counter. So, make sure to go directly to a full-service ticket counter when you arrive at the airport.
Proper Case Requirements: Firearms must be unloaded and stored in a hard-sided, locked container that can’t be opened easily. This container must completely secure the firearm to prevent any access, even during the rigors of travel handling.
Firearm Inspection Tag: At the ticket counter, a Customer Service Agent will guide you through completing a firearm inspection tag. This is a quick step that ensures your firearm is properly documented for travel.
Flying with a firearm isn’t as daunting as it seems when you follow these simple steps. Southwest’s website and the TSA guidelines can keep you informed about any policy updates.
With the right prep, you can feel safe, secure, and ready to enjoy your journey—Texas style. 🤠
