Traveling - To Carry or Not to Carry?

Traveling - To Carry or Not to Carry?

Our family is deep in the packing stage for our summer vacation that we are leaving for very soon. So the topic comes up with whether we choose to conceal carry or not. And if we choose not to, will we choose another device to self protection.

The following breaks down how I make these decisions before a trip.

First when planning to travel, it is crucial to know whether the destination allows you to carry concealed. So it is best to take the time to do research on whether you are even able to conceal carry in the location you are traveling too. Also think about the places will you will be traveling through to get to your destination. For example, on our summer trip we will be in 3 different states, I have going to research the laws in all of those states.

Here's how to research:

  1. Check Local Laws: Start by visiting the official website of the state or country's law enforcement or government. Look for sections on firearms or concealed carry laws.

  2. Use Reciprocity Maps: Websites like the USCCA offer interactive concealed carry reciprocity maps that show where your permit is valid [6].

  3. Consult Legal Resources: Websites such as the NRA-ILA provide comprehensive information on right-to-carry laws [3].

  4. Call Ahead: When in doubt, contact local law enforcement in the destination area to confirm the latest regulations.

Concealed Carry When Traveling by Air

Traveling by air with a firearm requires careful planning to comply with airline and TSA regulations:
  1. Declare Your Firearm: At check-in, declare your firearm with the airline. Ensure it is unloaded and stored in a hard-sided, locked container. Ammunition must be stored separately or in the same container in specific packaging [2].
  2. Know the Rules: Each airline may have specific requirements. Check their website or contact customer service before your trip.
  3. Destination Laws: Declaring a firearm in your checked luggage does not grant permission to carry it at your destination. Ensure compliance with local laws [2].

Alternatives to Concealed Carry in Restricted Locations

When traveling to places where concealed carry is not allowed, consider these alternatives:
  1. Non-Lethal Self-Defense Tools: Carry pepper spray, a tactical flashlight, or a personal alarm. These tools provide a means of self-defense without violating local laws.
  2. Secure Storage: If you must travel with your firearm, look for secure storage options like gun safes or lockers at your destination.
  3. Situational Awareness: Enhance your safety by staying aware of your surroundings and avoiding high-risk areas.
By following these steps, you can ensure a safer and more compliant travel experience with your concealed carry lifestyle.
